SoTL
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
How It Started
My dedication to fostering student success led to my nomination for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) fellowship at the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT) in 2022-2023.
As a fellow, I focused on exploring how the completion of the group contract in the first-year writing classroom affects students’ communication and learning after the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, I designed an IRB-approved study for two sections of my Composition & Communication II course (44 students) and developed a series of individual and group reflection exercises that had students practice active listening, collaboration, and conflict resolution in a safe environment.
How It Developed
The work I conducted as a fellow became the basis of my presentation for the university-wide 2023 GradTeach Live! competition, modeled after the Three-Minute Thesis competition (3MT). I placed first by demonstrating how I use group contracts and the scaffolding of individual and group reflection to foster students’ collaborative communication skills.

Next Steps
I presented my preliminary findings at the Teaching & Learning Research Roundtable in April of 2023. After the data is processed, I plan on submitting an article to Higher Education and testing my conclusions on a larger scale in a new institution.
